      My Solemn Vow

You don’t own me, not really.
          No more than you can own a child
          Or sunshine
          Or the air you breathe.
I belong to the One who created me.
I have been entrusted into your care.
You are a steward over me for my time on Earth.
I believe you love me and desire to do what’s best for me,
          And I am grateful.
But you don’t speak my language,
          So sometimes we struggle to communicate.
          Remember to not take it out on me.
For you, likewise, are entrusted to my care
          And I love you,
          Even though we don’t always understand one another,
I will always be forgiving,
          Loyal,
          Faithful.
I will console you.
I will watch over you,
          Protect you,
          Be a constant companion.
One day, when I return to my Creator
          I will have the freedom every creature longs for.
Until then …
          I will run free in my dreams
          But I will stay by your side
          For as long as I can
          Loving you
          Protecting you
          Unconditionally.
And all I ask is that you
          Love me
          Protect me
          Care for me back.
